I watched Braveheart yesterday - first time. I had myself a good, long cry...
I called my dad before hand (I was babysitting) and asked if he thought it would be okay. He gave me a very helpful tip, one that I will remember for the rest of my life. He just told me that I ought to pray before hand and tell the Lord, "Jesus, when I'm done watching this movie I don't want to leave carrying all the crap from the movie with me, in my spirit. I want to learn what I can from it and take the good stuff with me. Please would you give me discernment, Holy Spirit, and help me to take only what is good away from this movie." - I believe a Christian, and any person for that matter, ought to be very careful as to what they allow into their spirit, into their system. The Bible teaches us that we become those that we hang around, things influence us without our knowing it, and it affects our subconscious. All the time this happens. When you are hanging out with your friends and they’re listening to unedifying music, it affects you in some way whether you choose to acknowledge it or not. And since our battle is 'not against flesh and blood', I simply like to be a little extra careful.
So as I watched this extraordinary film (and my new favorite) it occurred to me:
what if an every day
Sunday-sermon were like this film.
I learned and was inspired and motivated more by this 3 hour movie, than I have been in any Sunday-sermon in my entire life.
And you might be saying, “Yeah well, hello…It’s Braveheart!!” , to that I say...um...true...
Although, it’s not highly irregular to have our preacher preach his sermon for longer than 2 hours on a Sunday morning.
We as Christian’s go to church to learn, to grow in our faith, to be encouraged, to worship the Lord –and not just through music although that may be a form for some people.
When have you gone to a Sunday-sermon where you took away as much as I’m sure you took from the movie Braveheart? (And if you haven’t seen it yet, I encourage you: go rent it from Blockbuster right now, kneel before the Lord, say that prayer my dad encouraged me to say – and say it sincerely – and watch that movie! Then ask yourself the question again: when was the last time you took as much from a Sunday-sermon as you did from that movie?)
Wouldn’t it be amazing if that was how church was?
How able it was to impact like that?
If our weekly Sunday-sermons were full of Braveheart movies with Christian themes, or something we as Christians need and can relate to, I bet America would be saved before 2008!
I wish there were movies, and they don’t have to be full of action or romance, but it just seems to me, that something like that movie is so unforgettable, something you will carry with you the rest of your life.
I wish there were more movies of that quality out there today, and we could just watch them to get our learning alongside of church – instead of corrupting our minds every time we watch a movie we would be edifying it.
